I saw your exhibition on Saturday. I liked the carefully executed paintings. I liked that they were small and monochromatic and showed restraint."Good Fire" in particular. The burning of the shipping palettes, a potent symbol of industry in a towering pillar of flames.Beautiful, but hinting at tragedy. I read the cave piece as black teeth in the mouth of a dragon.Subterranean, a creature of hell. The cross - less a religious symbol, more of a Red Cross in shape. Life saving, a preservative. I thought of Werner Herzog's film "Lessons of Darkness", the massive fires and the thick oil gushing from the ground like black blood. On a more personal note. My father used to buy large blocks of tar that was shiny and brittle for roof repair and we as children would break pieces off and chew it like gum.Perhaps that was a good thing. The Finns believed that wood tar had medicinal properties. Good work! Dark and strong with a just a touch of bitterness.
I saw the show this past sunday and loved it. 'Exhumed Section of the Tar Caves' was really impactful, loved the textures in everything. thanks for the show!
